Sessions focusing on developing engagement, confidence and fine motor skills for Dementia and memory loss

Sessions can focus on a wide range of areas; sessions for those with Dementia or memory loss and their carers are calm and relaxed sessions; giving each individual the time to meet the different animals while chatting about them and reminiscing about animals in their earlier lives. Time and resources are given to learn about the animals, make choices and demonstrate preference between animals and activities while providing motivation to move around the room and have a go at a new activity with support; increasing self esteem, engagement and enjoyment.

The presence of the animals reduces the feeling of pressure to perform as the activities are based around making treats for the animals or spending time with the animals themselves.

Feedback from a recent session in Bristol at a group for those with Dementia and their carers:

‘I did not think she would join in with the activity (threading vegetables on string for the chickens) but not only joined in but enjoyed the activities and focused on it for an extended period of time. She was then motivated to walk across the room to take the treats to the chickens so they could enjoy it’.
